Psalm 40 (Week 5)

PSALM (WEEK 5)

Psalm 40: 11-13 NIV: Do not withhold your mercy from me, Lord; may your love and faithfulness always protect me. 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. 13 Be pleased to save me, Lord; come quickly, Lord, to help me.

  • Vs. 11a: Do not withhold your mercy from me, Lord…

  • Single moments of desperation often result from extended seasons of unresolve. When we ask God for help and it seems He either doesn’t hear us, or is choosing to ignore responding.

  • Vs. 11b: May your love and faithfulness always protect me

  • Vs. 12a—For troubles without number surround me.

II Timothy 3:12 NLT: Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

  • "Here he calls afflictions and sorrows, persecutions, for it is not possible that a man pursuing the course of virtue should not be exposed to grief, tribulation, and temptations. For how can he escape it who is treading in the strait and narrow way, and who has heard, that in the world you shall have tribulation? - John Chrysostom (c. 347-407 A.D.)

John 16:33 NIV: I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

  • Vs. 12b: … my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.

Psalm 40:12 NLT: For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.

Psalm 32: 3-6 NIV: When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me;
my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them.

  • “Love that which enables you to please, love “confession,” if you desire “honour.” “Confession” is the handmaid of “honour,” the handmaid of “worship.” Both are for you. “Thou art clothed with confession and honour,” and “Confession and worship are before Him.” In truth, where confession is, there is worship, and there is honour. If there are sins, they are washed away in confession; if there are good works, they are commended by confession. When you confess your faults, it is a sacrifice to God of a troubled spirit; when you confess the benefits of God, you offer to God the sacrifice of praise. Confession is a fair ornament of the soul, which both cleanses a sinner and makes the righteous more thoroughly cleansed.” — Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153 A.D.)

  • Vs. 12c: and my heart fails within me.

Psalm 94:19 NASB: When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comfort delights my soul.

Isaiah 41:10 NASB: Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

  • Vs. 13: Be pleased to save me, Lord; come quickly, Lord, to help me.

  • Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

  • Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
