PSALM (WEEK 6)

[Psalm 40:7, 14-15 NLT] 7 Then I said, "Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: ... 14 May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. 15 Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, "Aha! We've got him now!"

  • David could have, when he was king, exacted upon many of the enemies, his justice.

  1. David sought justice!

  2. David was truthful where he stood and truthful about how he wanted justice or retribution for those enemies.

  3. David is not acting in anger, though he may desire to due to sinful nature, nevertheless he instead turns and surrenders all the circumstances to God.

  • This is David leaning into not taking on the battles of the world, yet rather leading into God to manage those situations for him.

  • Earlier in this Psalm, David rejoiced that God had lifted him from the pit (v. 2). But now, he’s back in distress again. This is true of life and life in Christ.

  • So we ask ourselves, how do we manage when we do have “enemies” that appear in our life? How do you manage when you are striving to be a fully devoted follower of Christ?

  • “Enemies”

  1. Cry out to God honestly.

  2. Trust His justice and respond with worship, not revenge.

  3. Our faith in the waiting and turning to God’s ways declares, “The Lord is great!”

  4. We cannot question the outcome.

  • Jesus turned His enemies to God.
