SERMON ON THE MOUNT (WEEK 7)
Our Father who is in the skies, may your name be recognized as holy, may your kingdom come, and may your will be done as it is in the skies, so also on the land. Our daily provision of bread give to us today. And forgive us our debts just as we have also forgiven those indebted to us. And don't lead us to be tested, but deliver us from the evil one. –Jesus of Nazareth as quoted in Matthew 6:9-13 (pure translation)
Ephesians 2:4-7 NIV: But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
“You must learn to call on the Lord. Don’t sit all alone, shaking your head and letting your thoughts torture you. Instead, fall on your knees, and raise your hands and eyes toward Heaven. Read a psalm. Say the Lord’s Prayer, and tearfully tell God what you need.” – Martin Luther (1483-1546 AD)
Psalm 147: 10-11 NIV: His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of the warrior; 11 the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.
“The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer for the desperate, who recognize that this world is not as it should be and that only God can set things straight.” –Craig S. Keener
“I used to think the Lord’s Prayer was a short prayer; but as I live longer, and see more of life, I begin to believe there is no such thing as getting through it. If a man, in praying that prayer, were to be stopped by every word until he had thoroughly prayed it, it would take him a lifetime.” – Henry Ward Beecher, Author and Clergyman (1813-1887 AD)
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
