PSALM 40:3-5 (WEEK 2)
Uncertainty – despair – confusion – disheartenment – anger - struggle
Confession: Confessing one to another is something we treat as an infrequent item that we must do and it seems hard. But, in reality, it's the item that we have discovered which must be done frequently. Not just for our sins, but also for our: uncertainty – despair – confusion – disheartenment – anger - struggle
[Psalm 40:1-5 NLT] 1 For the choir director: A psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. 3 He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. 4 Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols. 5 O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.
The “pit”: a place where one feels trapped and helpless, unable to escape on their own.
V 3 “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.”
Knowing Christ is the source of the song that comes out of our hearts, mouth, and soul toward God as a song of praise. He has removed us from the pit — He has brought us through.
V 3 Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.
When we see and experience someone who has come through the pit, their joy toward God is so real that it inspires you.
That’s what David means by a “new song.” It’s a visible, audible expression of God’s saving grace.
V4 Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.
The “proud” represent self-reliance — don’t need God.
The “idols” — false solutions and empty promises the world offers, an alternate place where we put our trust in.
V5 O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.
This is a place in our life where we need to be. God’s works are too many to count and His thoughts toward us are too wonderful to grasp.
