SERMON ON THE MOUNT (WEEK 3)

  • Hebrews 10:20, “The new and living way opened for us through the death of Christ”

  • Jesus’ new way is a rescue into communities of wholehearted love and respect. Jesus described this way of life by using an ancient biblical word — righteousness.

  • A righteous person is someone who consistently does right by God and right by others. Jesus said, "Those who live this way are entering the Kingdom of the heavens.”

  • Righteousness is not just external behavior—it’s inward transformation.

  • Sermon on the Mount is teaching us to apply God's wisdom of transformation in our everyday lives, so we can be righteous/do righteousness before God and others.

Matthew 6:1 [NLT]: Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.

  • Living in righteousness is a rescue into communities of wholehearted love and respect.

    • God rescues us from isolation and brings us into a Kingdom family.

    • The Sermon on the Mount models life in community—with love, mercy, and humility.

Matthew 5:7 [NLT]: God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Matthew 5:9 [NLT]: God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.

Matthew 7:12 [NLT]: Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.

  • Righteous living is the Kingdom of Heaven

Matthew 7:21 [NLT]: Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.

Matthew 7:24 [NLT]: Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.

  • Jesus is inviting us into a whole new way of life — a Kingdom life of righteousness, love, and wisdom.  This way leads to joy, peace, and the approval of our Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:16 [NLT]: Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
