Sermon On The Mount (Week 1)

INTRODUCTION

Matthew 5:1-2 NIV: “Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.”

  • The Children of Israel longed for a Messiah — a deliverer — who would set them free, restore their nation, and bring back God's favor on them.

  • Religious life was solely focused on external obedience, lead and directed by the Pharisees.

  • To live in the Kingdom way, the Israelites would have to turn away from the current practices and dwell solely in the new teachings of Christ.

  • “Crushed and Defeated People”

  • The Sermon on the Mount is a “TED” talk. It is a message for those who desire to live fully devoted to Christ and are willing to reorient their lives around Him.

  • NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

Private Transformation vs Public Performance

The Condition of the Heart vs Outward Behavior

Forgiveness vs Unforgiveness

Life on a Firm Foundation vs Shifting Sand

True Righteousness vs Religious Piety

Intimate Devotion vs Ritual Methods

  • The children of Israel and those gathered on the mount were anxious, divided, and spiritually hungry.  And like them, we often settle for shallow religion and self-centered spirituality, which leads to public performance over private transformation.

  • The life of a "Sermon on the Mount” individual is radical, counter-cultural, and deeply personal.
