What does “walked with God” mean?
The Hebrew expression behind “walked with God” describes an ongoing manner of life, and is intended to describe the direction and character of one’s life.
Genesis 5:18-32 NLT: 18 When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. 19 After the birth of Enoch, Jared lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 20 Jared lived 962 years, and then he died. 21 When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived in close fellowship with God for another 300 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 23 Enoch lived 365 years, 24 walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him. 25 When Methuselah was 187 years old, he became the father of Lamech. 26 After the birth of Lamech, Methuselah lived another 782 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 27 Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died. 28 When Lamech was 182 years old, he became the father of a son. 29 Lamech named his son Noah, for he said, "May he bring us relief from our work and the painful labor of farming this ground that the LORD has cursed." 30 After the birth of Noah, Lamech lived another 595 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 31 Lamech lived 777 years, and then he died. 32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Enoch
He is born in the genealogical line between Adam and Noah, and ultimately in the line of Christ.
Walked in close fellowship with God. (Said of him twice)
One day he disappeared, because God took him.
Hebrews 11 tells us it was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying — "he disappeared, because God took him." For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God. - The next verse says “And it is impossible to please God without faith.”
Jude 14-15 – He speaks condemns the people
Genesis 6:9 NLT: 9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
Noah
Noah walked with God when the world did not.
Noah received what God said.
He acted before he could see the outcome.
He did what God asked because he trusted the One speaking.
When God was faithful to Noah, Noah answered with worship.
Hebrews 11:7 NLT: 7 It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.
Abraham is called God's friend.
Moses speaks with God as a friend.
Enoch and Noah simply walk with God.
Friendship means walking with God through the ordinary days of life.
Friendship with God means trusting His faithfulness enough to shape your life around it.
