The “Versus” Verses: Week 3
THE “VERSUS” VERSES (WEEK 3): THE PASSIVE VS. THE DILIGENT
Passive/Idle vs. Diligent/Initiator
The Drift
Passive, Idle, Lazy, Procrastinator, Slothful, Inactive
Diligent, Initiator, Dedicated, Constant, Attentive
Often I confuse waiting on God with doing nothing. I imagine that being ‘still’ means being idle — yet Proverbs shows me that those who trust in God are active in faith. They seek, pursue, build, and initiate.
The difference between the passive and the diligent isn’t who God favors more — it’s who responds to His prompting with faithful action. God blesses movement in my life that’s aligned with His ways.
Being idle/passive is a slow current that pulls me away from God’s ways and full life in Christ.
Being diligent and an initiator is choosing, each day, to act in faith in all things of life in Christ.
The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30)
When I take initiative (when I start the conversation) — forgive first, serve first, and pray first — I reflect my Father’s heart. As I choose diligence and step forward in faith, I carry His divine resemblance and bring Christ’s ways actively into the situations around me.
Proverbs 6:6-11 NLT: 6 Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! 7 Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, 8 they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. 9 But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? 10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest — 11 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.
Proverbs 12:24 NLT: Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave.
Proverbs 13:4 NLT: Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.
Proverbs 13:11 NLT: Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.
Proverbs 6:4-11 NLT: 4 Don't put it off; do it now! Don't rest until you do. 5 Save yourself like a gazelle escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net. 6 Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones.
Proverbs 24:30-34 NLT: 30 I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense. 31 I saw that it was overgrown with nettles. It was covered with weeds, and its walls were broken down. 32 Then, as I looked and thought about it, I learned this lesson: 33 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest — 34 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.
